Description
Wet Crusher/Granulator operates at significantly higher speeds, typically between 200-800 RPMs. Heavy-duty knives are mounted at an angle (often adjustable) on an open, hollow rotor in various configurations. When the blades on the fast-spinning rotor make contact with the stationary blades on the granulator housing, the feed stock is cut into relatively fine flakes or regrinds. At the bottom or surrounding the spinning rotor is a sizing screen—a metal screen with holes corresponding to your desired output size. The plastic material remains in the cutting chamber until it reaches the target size, usually ranging from several inches down to 1/8 of an inch, at which point it falls through the screen.
How It Works
For washing plastic film and PET bottles, industry professionals typically recommend using a wet crusher/granulator. These machines function similarly to standard granulators but incorporate a constant stream of water sprayed into the cutting chamber. This configuration is ideal for most plastic film and bottle washing lines because it not only accomplishes size reduction but also provides initial cleaning or “pre-treatment” of dirty plastics before they proceed to additional washing equipment. The added water serves as a lubricant for the rotating blades, reducing heat and friction, which significantly extends blade life before sharpening becomes necessary.
While plastic granulators offer the distinct advantage of producing smaller-sized outputs, their high-speed moving parts generate considerable noise and produce substantial amounts of dust or fines. Manufacturers of higher-quality granulators typically offer optional soundproofing enclosures and various methods for dust/fines reduction, including additional screens, reduced operating speeds, vacuum systems, and wet granulation technology.
